Commerce

Meridian Commerce

A headless storefront and operations console for a homeware brand shipping to eleven countries.
Overview

Meridian sells furniture that takes a fortnight to make and three weeks to ship. Their old store was built for t-shirts. Everything about the buying experience needed to acknowledge that a sofa is a considered purchase.

The challenge

One product template served a R400 candle and a R38,000 modular sofa. Lead times were buried in the FAQ, returns were ambiguous, and the merchandising team could not publish a collection without a developer.

Approach

How the work was actually done.

Three decisions that shaped the outcome more than anything else on the project.

  1. 01

    Split the catalogue by intent

Considered purchases got room-scale photography, material notes, delivery windows and a save-for-later flow. Impulse items got a fast, single-screen path to checkout.

  2. 02

Hand the storefront back to the merchants

Every editorial block on the site is a schema in Sanity. The merchandising team ships new collections on their own schedule. Twenty-eight went live in the first quarter without a deploy.

  3. 03

    Design for slow logistics

Lead time is a first-class field, surfaced on the card, the product page, the cart and the confirmation email. Support tickets asking 'where is my order' fell away almost entirely.

Outcome

Meridian's conversion rate on high-consideration items nearly doubled, and the merchandising team stopped queueing behind engineering to publish a campaign.

The storefront finally sells the way we sell in the showroom. Slow, tactile, honest about lead times, and it converts far better for it.
